G1, G8, G9 – Mining Supervisor

Mining Supervisor

The G189 Mine Supervisor course (also referred to as S123 or G1-G8-G9) prepares participants for supervisory roles in the mining industry under Queensland legislation. It develops competencies in risk management, safety investigations, and communication required to fulfill statutory obligations of mine supervisors.

Course Overview

The G189 Mine Site Supervisor course (also known as S123 or S1 S2 S3) is a nationally recognised training program designed for individuals appointed to supervisory roles in mining, exploration, or extractive operations. Under Queensland and national mining safety legislation, site supervisors and statutory roles must hold specific competencies to ensure safety, risk management, and communication obligations are met.

This course equips learners with critical supervisory skills in risk assessment, incident investigation, regulatory compliance, and effective communication in resource-sector contexts.

Core Units of Competency

Upon successful completion, learners will receive a Statement of Attainment in the following units:

  • RIIRIS301E — Apply risk management processes
  • RIIWHS301E — Conduct safety and health investigations
  • RIICOM301E — Communicate information

These units correspond to supervisory tasks in identifying hazards, analysing and mitigating risk, conducting investigations into safety incidents, and effectively communicating with teams and stakeholders.

Course Content Summary

Throughout the G189 program, participants will engage with:

  • The role and responsibilities of a mining supervisor under legislation
  • Risk management frameworks and how to apply them onsite
  • How to conduct safety and health investigations, including fact finding, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
  • Communication strategies in a supervisory context: written, verbal, negotiation, and reporting
  • Interaction of site safety systems, audits, and compliance mechanisms

Delivery & Assessment

This course is delivered entirely online through a self-paced learning format, allowing participants to complete their training at their own convenience. The interactive online platform provides engaging learning materials, case studies, and practical examples relevant to real mining operations.

Assessment is conducted online and includes scenario-based tasks, interactive modules, and applied knowledge questions designed to confirm understanding of key supervisory responsibilities. Learners are required to demonstrate competence through the completion of digital assessments that cover risk management, incident investigation, and communication processes.

All assessment submissions are reviewed by qualified assessors, and feedback is provided to ensure learners achieve competency in line with industry and legislative requirements.

Who Should Enrol

This course is suited for:

  • Newly appointed or prospective mine site supervisors, team leaders, or statutory officers
  • Safety representatives or personnel transitioning into oversight roles in mining or extracts
  • Individuals who must satisfy statutory requirements under the Coal Mining Safety & Health Act or Mining & Quarrying Safety & Health Act

Outcome

Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment for G189 (S123 / S1 S2 S3), with the three required units of competency formally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
