RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to safely enter and work in confined spaces (e.g., tanks, pits, silos) across the Resources and Infrastructure Industries. Training covers planning, hazard identification, atmospheric monitoring, correct use of PPE, applying lock-out/tag-out procedures, and maintaining communication with a stand-by person as per the Confined Space Entry Permit.

Introduction:

The RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces course provides participants with the competencies required to safely enter, work in, and exit confined spaces while maintaining compliance with legislative and site requirements.

Confined spaces present serious hazards, including oxygen deficiency, toxic atmospheres, and restricted movement. This course ensures that learners can recognise these risks, follow entry permits, use monitoring  equipment, and work under a permit-controlled system.

Training aligns with the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011, the Confined Spaces Code of Practice 2021 (QLD), and the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package (RII) requirements.

Target Audience:

This course is designed for individuals who may be required to work in or around confined spaces as part of their role, including:

  • Mine, quarry, and processing plant workers.
  • Civil construction and infrastructure personnel.
  • Maintenance technicians and plant operators.
  • Safety observers, permit issuers, and supervisors who oversee confined space operations.
  • Contractors entering confined or restricted areas under a permit system.

Learning Outcomes:

  • By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify and assess confined space hazards in accordance with site procedures and WHS legislation.
  • Interpret and follow confined space permits, risk assessments, and entry procedures.
  • Select, inspect, and correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
  • Conduct atmospheric testing using gas detectors and interpret results.
  • Implement lock-out and tag-out procedures for isolation of energy sources.
  • Maintain communication with the stand-by person and other team members.
  • Enter, work, and exit confined spaces safely, following emergency and rescue protocols.

Learning Methods:

This course is delivered through a blended learning model, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical training.

  • Theory Component: Delivered face-to-face, covering legislation, risk management, permits, and safety procedures.
  • Practical Component: Conducted in a simulated confined space environment using authentic industry equipment such as gas monitors, harnesses, tripods, and communication systems.
  • Assessment Methods: Include written knowledge tests, observation of practical performance, and scenario-based demonstrations of confined space entry and work activities.

Program Benefits:

  • Fulfils the training and competency requirements for confined space entry under WHS Regulations and industry standards.
  • Enhances workplace safety awareness, reducing risk of injury or fatality when entering confined spaces.
  • Provides a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment on successful completion.
  • Builds practical, job-ready skills for those entering mining, civil construction, or industrial maintenance roles.
  • Demonstrates compliance with site safety management systems, improving employability and contractor credentials.
