PUASAR032 – Undertake vertical resuce

Undertake vertical resuce

This combined course equips participants with both foundational rescue skills (PUASAR022) and advanced vertical rescue capabilities (PUASAR032). Participants learn to operate safely as a rescue team member and perform high-angle rescues, including rigging systems, rope work, and casualty handling in vertical environments.

Course Overview

This nationally recognised combined course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to safely participate in general rescue operations and perform vertical rescues using ropes and associated equipment. It combines the competencies from PUASAR032 – Undertake vertical rescue and PUASAR022 – Participate in a rescue operation, offering comprehensive training in technical rope rescue techniques and general emergency response practices.

The program is ideal for emergency response team members, mine site personnel, construction workers, and others who may be required to conduct rescues at height or in challenging environments.

Units of Competency

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following units:

  • PUASAR032 – Undertake vertical rescue
  • PUASAR022 – Participate in a rescue operation

These nationally recognised units form part of the Public Safety Training Package (PUA) and contribute toward qualifications such as the RII30719 Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue.

Course Content

Participants will learn to:

  • Prepare and participate in rescue operations in accordance with procedures
  • Conduct risk assessments and select appropriate rescue techniques
  • Set up and operate rope systems for vertical rescue scenarios
  • Perform safe access, egress, and casualty recovery at height
  • Use rescue equipment such as harnesses, ropes, pulleys, and stretchers
  • Apply safe work practices and emergency communication protocols
  • Operate effectively as part of a coordinated rescue team

Training is delivered in alignment with current Australian Standards, WHS legislation, and industry codes of practice for rope access and rescue operations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Safely conduct and support vertical rescue operations
  • Identify hazards and implement appropriate control measures
  • Use and maintain rope rescue systems and equipment
  • Communicate effectively during rescue activities and debriefs
  • Apply structured rescue procedures to ensure casualty and team safety

Delivery and Assessment

This course is delivered through a combination of theory learning and practical assessments that replicate real-world rescue environments. Learners participate in simulated vertical rescue scenarios involving rope systems, controlled descents, and casualty retrievals.

Assessment includes practical demonstrations, scenario-based exercises, and written theory components to confirm competency across both rescue units. All assessments are conducted by qualified trainers and assessors with extensive industry experience in technical rescue operations.

Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for PUASAR032 – Undertake vertical rescue and PUASAR022 – Participate in a rescue operation, recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and valued across industries requiring advanced rescue and emergency response capabilities.
