Course Overview
This nationally recognised unit provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely inspect, use, and maintain self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in hazardous or low-oxygen environments. The course is ideal for workers who may be required to operate breathing equipment during emergency response, confined space entry, or other high-risk tasks.
Training covers both theoretical understanding and hands-on application, ensuring participants are confident and competent in real-world scenarios where respiratory protection is essential.
Course Content
Participants will learn to:
- Identify situations that require the use of breathing apparatus
- Conduct pre-operational checks and equipment inspections
- Fit and operate SCBA safely and effectively
- Communicate and coordinate with team members while wearing breathing apparatus
- Monitor air supply and manage emergencies
- Clean, maintain, and store breathing apparatus after use
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:
- Select and use the correct breathing apparatus for the task
- Operate SCBA confidently in a controlled environment
- Apply safe work practices in accordance with WHS and site procedures

Assessment
Assessment includes practical demonstrations, observation of skills, and short written or oral questioning to confirm knowledge of safe breathing apparatus operation and maintenance.
Outcome
Successful participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for MSMWHS216 – Operate Breathing Apparatus, recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
