PUASAR025 – Undertake confined space rescue

This combined rescue package equips participants with both the foundational skills to operate as a rescue team member (PUASAR022) and the advanced techniques required to perform rescues in confined space environments (PUASAR025). The training covers teamwork, risk assessment, casualty extraction, rescue planning, and use of specialised rescue equipment in restricted and hazardous atmospheres.

Introduction:

This course is designed for emergency responders, site safety personnel, and technical teams who must be capable of contributing in general rescue operations and executing specialised confined space rescues. The dual qualification ensures that individuals are competent in both broader rescue functions and the high-risk discipline of confined space rescue under Australian standards and workplace safety legislation.

Delivering both units in one package enhances efficiency, ensures continuity of skills, and ensures consistency in rescue methodology for teams working across diverse environments (open areas, urban, industrial, and confined spaces).

Target Audience:

  • Site rescue teams, confined space teams, and safety response personnel.
  • Emergency service volunteers and staff who must work in general and confined rescue environments.
  • Contractors and maintenance personnel operating in industrial sites with confined space risk.
  • Individuals required to maintain both general rescue and confined space rescue competence.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Prepare for rescue operations and align with operational and safety briefings.
  • Participate effectively in a rescue team, assist with risk assessment, scene control, and communication.
  • Select, inspect, and use rescue equipment and PPE appropriate to rescue tasks.
  • Conduct rescue operations safely, including casualty preparation, extraction, and stabilization.
  • Plan and conduct confined space entries and exit during rescue, including atmospheric testing, ventilation, and isolation.
  • Perform confined space casualty recovery techniques and execute safe removal.
  • Document the rescue operation, debrief actions, and evaluate rescue performance.

Learning Methods:

  • Theory / Classroom Sessions: rescue principles, standards, risk frameworks
  • Rescue Drills / Simulated Exercises: general rescue scenarios, team coordination
  • Confined Space Practical Work: real or simulated confined space environments, casualty insertion/removal, atmospheric monitoring
  • Scenario-based Simulations: combining general and confined rescue in integrated incident situations
  • Assessment: written / oral knowledge checks observed practical performance in rescue operations under supervision

Program Benefits:

  • One consolidated training program for both rescue team participation and confined space rescue.
  • Builds both general rescue skills and specialised confined space capability in one session.
  • Improves team effectiveness, rescue readiness, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Cost and time efficiencies for organisations requiring both competencies.
  • Provides nationally recognised Statements of Attainment for both PUASAR022 and PUASAR025.

Content:

  • Rescue principles, teamwork, communication & scene control
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment, and rescue planning
  • Rescue equipment selection, inspection, and pre-use checks
  • Casualty handling, packaging and extrication techniques
  • Confined space essentials: definitions, hazards, atmospheric testing, ventilation
  • Confined space access, operation, and rescue techniques
  • Isolation, lock-out/tag-out, and safe re-entry protocols
  • Emergency procedure, backup, and retrieval systems
  • Post-rescue debriefing, documentation, and lessons learned
