RIIMPO304E – Conduct wheel loader operations

This unit provides the nationally recognised skills and knowledge to safely operate a wheel loader and handle load-shifting duties on site. Training encompasses pre-operational inspections, safe operating techniques, load control and stability, shutdown procedures, and housekeeping in alignment with site and WHS requirements.
Introduction:
The RIIMPO304E – Conduct Wheel Loader Operations course equips participants to competently and safely operate wheel loaders across mining, construction, quarrying, and infrastructure settings. It focuses on planning, performing, and finalising wheel loader tasks while managing hazards, achieving load control, and following regulatory and site procedures.
Participants will gain the confidence and competence required to handle wheel loader operations under supervision, respond to changing conditions, and contribute to safe, efficient worksite operations.
Target Audience:
- Plant operators who need formal competency for wheel loader duty.
- Operators in mining, civil, quarrying, or infrastructure projects.
- Maintenance or site personnel who occasionally operate loaders.
- Individuals seeking to upskill in heavy equipment operations under a recognised training package.
Learning Outcomes:
- Plan and prepare for wheel loader tasks, including risk assessments and documentation.
- Conduct pre-operational inspections, identify defects, and initiate remedial actions.
- Operate the wheel loader safely and efficiently to perform load-shifting activities.
- Manage load stability, centre of gravity, and safe material handling.
- Adapt operations to changing site, weather, or ground conditions.
- Perform shutdown, parking, and securing procedures.
- Conduct housekeeping activities, inspections, and maintenance checks after operations.
Learning Methods:
- Theory Delivery: Classroom or blended modules covering legislative, operational, and safety content
- Demonstration & Explanation: Trainer demonstrates loader operations, control techniques, hazard mitigation
- Practical Exercises: Learners practice pre-checks, maneuvering, load shifting, shutdown, and housekeeping tasks under supervision
- Scenario / Simulation: Tasks around site layout, load targets, changing conditions
- Assessment: Written or verbal theory test, and practical performance observation
Program Benefits:
- Provides certification in a core plant operation competency recognised nationally.
- Enhances operator safety, efficiency, and confidence when controlling wheel loaders.
- Reduces equipment damage and incident risk through correct procedures and hazard awareness.
- Contributes to production throughput by optimising loader performance.
- Supports progression into higher plant operator roles or other RII qualifications.
Content:
- WHS and legislative requirements, site procedures, and load shifting regulations
- Pre-start checks, inspections, and fault identification
- Safe operating techniques, manoeuvring, bucket control, travel with loads
- Load handling, stability, tipping, dumping, and material distribution
- Adjusting to surface conditions, slope, visibility, and weather impacts
- Shutdown, secured parking, and lock-out procedures
- Post-operation inspections, maintenance, housekeeping, and fault reporting
